Lan’s Story of Defying the Odds

Lan’s journey from a 12-year-old foster child to earning a Ph.D. in Plant Sciences from the City University of New York is nothing short of remarkable. Her story is a testament to perseverance, mentorship, and the power of community. And because of supporters like you, ISF continues to make stories like Lan’s possible.

As an ISF student, Lan was mentored by ISF Board Member and Student Selection Committee Member Debbie Finley, who walked alongside her throughout her education. Together, they attended the inaugural ISF Student Leadership and Life Skills Retreat and later pioneered the ISF Mission Trip Program, serving orphans in Guatemala.

When Lan reflects on her journey, she is overwhelmed with gratitude for ISF and her mentor, Debbie. With fewer than 3% of foster youth earning a degree—and fewer than 2% of Americans obtaining a doctorate—Lan’s achievements defy the odds. Thanks to the unwavering support of ISF and its community, she found the encouragement she needed to reach new heights.
