Skarlar is a very resilient young woman with a clear focus on the future. Having little guidance in her life, Skarlar has learned to make things happen. As she says, “To be successful you have to strive hard and work for it”.
Skarlar was too young to remember the last time she saw her parents. She has been told that she was 3 years old when her mother was incarcerated and it wasn’t until she became a senior in high school that she met her father. Fortunately her grandmother was able to take care of she and her sister but that ended in 2005 when her grandmother passed away. At age 16 Skarlar was transferred to foster care, which for her was a positive experience. For the first time in her life she was treated with respect and kindness. Before entering foster care, she had not realized that there was education beyond the high school level. Today she is the first person in her family to graduate from high school and next year she will be the first in her family to graduate from college.
Today Skarlar attends Prairie View A&M and is pursuing a major in Human Development & Family Services with a double minor in pre-nursing and business administration. She has a passion for children and wants a career involved with helping ill children. Her ultimate goal is to be a Child Life Specialist where she can use her skills and talents to help children and families cope with hospitalization. After completing her undergraduate degree Skarlar would like to go to grad school and obtain her masters in Speech Therapy.
